Chemistry Tutoring New York
Chemistry is perhaps the most abstract of the sciences, and for this reason, it can feel very difficult, but it doesn't have to be that way. By combining clear, personalized instruction in both conceptual chemistry and problem solving techniques, we help students acquire a solid understanding of chemistry and rapidly improved grades. Our tutors are experienced, highly professional educators who have the skills to make even tough concepts make sense.
In addition to offering general tutoring in chemistry, we also offer test preparation for the New York State Chemistry Regents Exam, the SAT Subject Test in Chemistry, and AP Chemistry.
New York State Chemistry Regents
The New York State Chemistry Regents Exam tests knowledge of a broad range of chemistry concepts and facts. It is normally taken after one year of an introductory survey course in chemistry and one year of algebra. Important topics on the exam include the structure of the atom, stoichiometry, chemical bonding, kinetics, and organic chemistry. The exam format includes a mix of multiple choice and free-response questions.
We work with students in several ways to help them get the best possible score on the Chemistry Regents Exam. First and foremost, we teach any core concepts that our students may be struggling with in a clear, approachable, and individualized manner. This leads to real and significant improvements in understanding and improved scores. We also help students understand the format of the exam and teach them ways that they can get the maximum number of points on the Regents with the amount of knowledge that they posses. Finally, we make sure our students get plenty of practice taking real Chemistry Regents Exams from the past. We’re proud to say that our multi-faceted approach gets consistent, positive results in the form of improved performance on the Chemistry Regents Exam.
SAT Subject Test in Chemistry
The SAT Subject Test in Chemistry is meant for students who have taken one year of high school chemistry. It is significantly more difficult than the New York State Chemistry Regents but not as challenging as the AP Chemistry exam. It is primarily a test of the student’s conceptual understanding of chemical principles, although there are also questions that require calculations. Major topics include the structure of the atom, reaction types, stoichiometry, and reaction rates.
Because the SAT Subject test in Chemistry is a test of knowledge, the primary way we help our students prepare for the test is straightforward: we make sure they thoroughly understand high school chemistry. We carefully evaluate the knowledge base of each one of our students and then tutor them in any areas of weakness and review topics in which they may be a little rusty. Of course, even on a content test such as this, test-taking savvy can help and we do cover topics such as knowing when to guess and using the process of elimination to the greatest advantage possible.
