NYC Biology Tutoring
On biology tests, it may seem like you are expected to know a near-infinite number of facts, each one of which must be individually memorized. However, in our experience, when students genuinely understand the major ideas that they are studying, the details become much easier to remember. This is why we always stress a conceptual understanding of the subject.
We use a variety of techniques with our biology tutoring to help our students achieve a higher level of understanding including visual models, analogies, thought experiments, reading and writing assignments, and occasionally even labs. And yes, all of this understanding does lead to better grades and higher test scores!
Of course, we also make sure that all of our students preparing for exams also get specific test preparation and plenty of practice with test questions.
Levels of biology that we tutor include:
AP Biology Exam
Advanced Placement Biology is a tough, college-level course and at New York Academics our AP Biology tutors are experts in biology and very knowledgeable about the specific material found on the AP Biology Exam.
The AP Biology Exam contains multiple choice questions testing students' knowledge of biological facts and concepts and ability to interpret data. There is also an essay section testing students' knowledge and ability to synthesize information.
There is a wide range of material on the AP Bio Exam. In general, the content breaks down to be about 25% about molecules and cells, 25% about heredity and evolution, and about 50% about organisms and communities.
At New York Academics, we identify the strengths and weaknesses of each of our students and work with them to achieve the high level of knowledge necessary to get a score that they can be proud of.
Biology SAT II
At New York Academics, we know the Biology SAT II inside out and have found that it is actually a bit more difficult than many of the commercially available preparation books would suggest. We identify the strengths and weaknesses of each of our students and work with them to achieve the high level of knowledge and understanding necessary to achieve a score that they can be proud of.
Most often, students take the Biology SAT II test after one year of high school biology, but some students take this test after additional biology classes. This test is approximately midway in difficulty between the Living Environment Regents and the AP Biology Exam. The test is used for college admissions- many selective colleges require applicants to have taken at least 3 SAT II subject tests.
There are two versions of the test called Biology M and Biology E. Biology M emphasizes molecular and cellular biology and Biology E emphasizes ecology and evolution. However, the Biology SAT II is at it's heart a comprehensive test and all students must take the core portion of the test covering general biology, including molecular biology, cellular structure, genetics, ecology, energy flow, evolution, and behavior.
